SUMMARY:History scholar to present on history of Gwangju Uprising on 43rd anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Korean history researcher Hayana Kim will speak in a free virtual event May 18 (7 p.m. CST) on the legacy of democracy in South Korea\, and in honor of the 43rd anniversary of the 1980 Gwangju Uprising\, a pivotal moment in South Korea’s struggle to reject a military dictatorship and re-establish democratic rule.  The uprising resulted in hundreds of deaths of demonstrators after the military was sent into the city of Gwangju to violently put down the pro-democracy demonstrations. \nThe presentation\, entitled Revolutionaries of the 5.18 Gwangju Uprising: Ordinary People’s Struggle for Democracy\, is sponsored by the HANA Center of Chicago\, and the NAKASEC Network. Kim’s presentation will be followed by a Q and A session\, and a response by Korean American youth.  The event will be held in English and Korean\, with interpretation in both languages. \nPlease see the link for registration and more information. \n
